I promise to return.

I loved the day when the swords
fell from the sky
and you and I did nothing
but dance to avoid them
until we tangled into one.
Even in that illusion
I’ve never felt something so real.
And even if yours is a face
I’ll sinfully forget,
I’d hope that time is kind enough
to let this memory remain.
Know this,
I only let go assuming I’d be back again.

Gospel

Apologies for the time away.

What is it that you whisper in my ear,

As we lie underneath these sheets,

This is yet another dream, I fear.

One where I know when I awake,

I’ll have dried tears running down my face,

And you’ll fade into the faintest memory.

So while we’re here in this world of white and softness,

Let me lean in close and hear you say something softer.

For your words are Gospel

And although you’ll not witness me kneeling,

I’ll still bury my face in your neck.

And really, that’s worship just the same.

The Dust that Settles

Happy Anniversary to two extraordinarily special people, Sudaraka and Lilakshi! I know I’m a few days late but I hope you take kindly to these words I wrote for you. I love the fact that the two of you exist and love each other; it’s truly beautiful to see.

SL

People too often, settle.

They settle themselves to merely complaining about the dust that’s collecting on the shelves and layering the glass on the window. We are so easily pulled into the idea that things should always remain exciting and for it to fade means the end. We are so vulnerable to the dust that settles until all the things we’ve fallen in love with, the skin, the soul, the shadow is hidden and forgotten.

Take the time, please do. Every now and then to wipe away the dirt. Push away the grime. The one you care about is just as easily covered by time, distance and life itself. Life is the weariest thing and there’s more than just dust that can hide away the things you should always keep in view.

So dust each other off, it only takes a gentle caress against the face, and they’ll never fade away.

Home & Heart

“Home is where the heart is”,

They say.

But I carry my heart

Everywhere,

I think that’s why

As I board a plane,

And peer at every seat

On every row

Down the aisle

I hope,

As my heart looks up

In earnest,

To maybe glimpse

Someone to share home with.

Breaths We Breathe

Happy Valentine’s Day to all! Sending my love to all of you out there, with every breath I take. 🙂

Love is realising that we

Are constantly breathing each other’s breaths.

Knowing, that each breath you take

Has something of someone else

A sigh, a laugh, a cry, an exasperation.

Love is knowing that each breath you take

Has been taken before

And it’s not just the oxygen from the trees

Or the giving nature of their leaves

That is keeping us alive.

It is the breath of you,

The breath of me

And the breath of all of humanity,

That keeps all of us warm

On the coldest of days.

Think of what else our breath has given,

The words we speak

The prayers we ask,

The portraits on windows

As it fogs up the glass.

I am almost convinced that our lungs love

Even more than our hearts.

For how would our hearts even beat,

If it wasn’t for the breaths we breathe?

Deep Ends & Letters

You are the deep end

That I am not afraid to wade through

Because the waters you are made of

Do not let me drown

But surround me

Like an envelope

Wraps a letter.

There are pockets of air between us

But I can still feel your skin

For I am the words

That sit on the letter’s surface,

Lucky enough to graze you.

Spaces – (Recited by Shreya Rajvanshi)

I am so lucky. Lucky enough to find a soul willing to read my words.

Thank you Shreya for so kindly accepting my request. I am thankful I came across your voice and even more thankful for it willing to read out the lines of this silly poet.

Everyone please go read Shreya’s poetry, it is brilliant, bold and beautiful! https://shreyarvj.wordpress.com/

But please listen to her first 🙂

For now we’ll hide ourselves

In tiny shelters,

Look into each other’s eyes

And imagine greater spaces.

Where our backs won’t strike

Against the walls

And our souls aren’t hidden

Behind torn shawls.

Where we don’t need pretend

The ceiling is a sky which is peeling

and that light bulbs are stars,

dusty and fading.

Where your lips can feel the wind

And not just my breath.

Where the dampness is the rain

And not your nervous sweat.

I promise, a big promise,

That even though we find ourselves

Where only our little hearts are heard,

I will take your hand and lead you

Where our mouths can shout the words.
